The Red Crescent branch in Al-Zawiya city has suspended its illegal immigrants-related activities, such as shelter, medical checks, and picking the migrants’ bodies from the sea and along the beach.
The Head of the Red Crescent Al-Zawiya branch, Ali Al-Henish, said the decision came due to the lack of equipment and necessary preparations at the branch as well as the small number of volunteers compared to the growing numbers of illegal migrants off the western coats.
Al-Hnish added that the local authorities and the administration of the Red Crescent in Libya did not reply to Al-Zawiya branch regarding picking the drowned bodies and burying them, pointing out that the International Organization for Migration (IOM) had previously told the branch that the issue of the bodies goes to local authorities only.
On Tuesday, the volunteers of the Al-Zawiya Red Crescent branch picked the bodies of two illegal immigrants at Al-Matrad summer resort’s beach, 15 km to the west of Al-Zawiya.
Al-Hnish concluded by expecting more bodies to surface on the beaches of the western coast’s beaches as one of the illegal migrants’ boats capsized in the last couple of days.
