The Municipal Council of Abu Salim has defied a decision by the Ministry of Education of UN-proposed government, to start the academic year on October 24, and decided to start classes ahead of schedule.

In a statement on Monday, the municipal council confirmed all schools in the administrative areas would open on Sunday 09.
"It would be a preliminary study for all primary, preparatory and secondary schools until the defined government date," the statement explained.

The unilateral decision of Abu Salim Municipality is the first of its kind in the western region, which cast a shadow over authorities of the UN-proposed government in the controlled regions.

The Tripoli-based Ministry of Education has rescheduled start of the school year 2016/2017 for the western and southern regions from October 03 to October 24 after failure to get textbooks from the eastern region on time.
