The knocking down of Tareq Ben Zeyad School in Hebira, Omar Al-Mukhtar district in Al-Bayda city has caused a great dismay among people especially after the news went viral on social media.

The dismay intensified knowing that the decision was made in the wake of a compliant made by a citizen against a former decision by the claiming owner of the land to shut the school that was built on the land.

According to documents, the person who claimed ownership of the land, the head of the disbanded elders council in Al-Bayda, Marajea Al-Abeid, and the mayor Ali Hussein as well as the head of the education bureau agreed on demolishing the school based on the decision of the projects office in Hebira town saying the school building is shaky and must be pulled down and replaced by another in 18 months or so.

Libyans on social media split over the incident with agreeing and disagreeing comments as the officials and relevant authorities in the eastern region remained passive toward it.

Despite the photo of the demolishing statement that was issued by the municipal council and the spreading of the photo on social media, officials from Al-Bayda municipality declined giving any comments in that regard.

The documents also showed that the military governor of the eastern region, Abdelraziq Al-Nathori, ordered the immediate demolishing of the school based on the deal that was reached between the three people although the residents filed a complaint against the owner of the land for shutting down the school, leaving many question marks hovering above the whole issues.
