The Tripoli-based Ministry of Education said Monday that the beginning of the school year 2016/2017 might be postponed again due to lack of school books.

Classes were expected to start on October 02, but the ministry modified the date late last month to October 24 for all school years in a bid to get school books in time, which has not happened yet. The ministry is expected to reschedule the date to November.

The Media Office of the Ministry of Education said the school books have not yet arrived in the western and southern regions of Libya, though they are available in the eastern region.

"The new school books arrived in Benghazi last May, but the officials there are reluctant to send them to the other regions, which makes the start of the new school year on time impossible," The Head of Media Office Ramadan Godwi told Raed TV.

"We might use plan B which is importing new books directly to Tripoli, but this would take more time and delay," he added.

Last month, several school administrations in Tripoli sent messages to parents asking them to hand over their children's last year school books to use them for this year in case the new books did not arrive.
