Libya and Italy signed on Wednesday a multimillion contract to rebuild the passengers’ terminal of Tripoli International Airport, which was completely destroyed in 2014 during Tripoli clashes against Dignity Operation affiliated groups from Zintan.

The contract was signed at Tripoli International Airport and the signing ceremony was attended by a number of ministers of the government of Presidential Council, some members of the High Council of State and House of Representatives and the Italian Ambassador to Libya Giuseppe Perrone.

The contract will be implemented in two stages with a total cost of 79 million dinars. In the first stage, a terminal for domestic flights with a capacity of 2.5 million passengers per year will be built in 10 months during which domestic and international flights will be reactivated. The international flights’ terminal with a capacity of 4.5 million passengers per year will be constructed in the second stage in 8 months’ time. Both terminals will be built on a total area of 30 thousand square meters.

The new Tripoli International Airport will be constructed by a consortium of Italian companies called Consorzio Aeneas.

Reconstruction works will start after approval of the contract by the Libyan Audit Bureau.

A Libyan Airlines plane touched down in Tripoli International Airport on Tuesday to mark the first landing in the airport since 2014.
