The Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Nour Eddin Salem, said yesterday that the generating power plants along with distribution lines and other electric facilities underwent a considerable material damage due to the ongoing clashes around different Libyan districts, let alone the exceptional hardships the General Electricity Company (GEC)is going through currently.

Speaking in a press conference, the Minister brought to light the fact that the GEC had several damages caused by the renewal of clashes in western Tripoli on April 23 leaving a power- generating disability going hand-in-hand with an increase in blackout hours reaching more than 12 a day.

“The clashes also damaged the generating electric circuits that link the main generating power plants in the western part of the general grid (Al-Zaweya power plant and Al-Rweis gas-generating station) to other parts. In addition to damages in power output lines that were hit during armed clashes causing a loss of about 800 megawatts from what Al-Zaweya power plant and Al-Rweis gas-generating station produce.” He added.

Concluding his take, the Minister stressed, in a warning tone, that unless the war stops, the blackouts will continue, yet they may increase in the number of hours reaching a prevailing utter darkness.
