It is located at the top of the Nafusa Mountains in western Libya, in the Jabal Al-Gharbi District, 130 km south of Tripoli, and most of its inhabitants are Amazigh.
It is considered one of the most important cities in the Nafusa Mountains, as it is the largest city in the Mountains.
It was the headquarters of the mujahideen against the Italians, as the mujahid, Suleiman Al-Baroni, took it as his headquarters and took it as the capital of the first independent government in 1912.

Origin of the Name

It is an Amazigh word whose origin is “Ifrane”, and its meaning is “the caves.” This may be due to the large number of caves in the area.
