The General Electricity Company (GEC) condemned what it described as the criminal acts done to the overhead power line (400 kilovolts) that connects Sabha station and the Great Man-Made River (GMR), which was ready to operate once Sabha station resumed work.

The GEC issued a statement saying the damage included the electric towers and the power lines with a very long distance estimated at 242 km, so that 163 towers out of 540 fell down, in addition to the cutting of the cables, stealing them and other vandalism that all cost the sector 40 million Libyan dinars.

“Such acts will bring bad impact on the GEC performance in the south leading to more suffering for the residents.” The statement reads.

The power network in the south has been suffering for the last few months during summer time with load shedding and power outages that would last 10 hours a day with such criminal acts adding to the problem and losing the country millions of dollars every year.
