Satellite images have uncovered looting to state owned factories over long periods. Abandoned factories are slowly being dismantled piece by piece to be recycled.

Reports show that the scrap metal is mainly being transported to the port of Misrata where local merchants are paying more than standard prices as the scrap is being exported and sold for Dollars.

Another fear is that with such high prices being paid this will encourage more people to turn to crime and steal public property. Over the last year there have been cases of street signs, public light posts and manhole covers stolen causing not just disruption but danger to the general public.
