UN says number of IDPs in Libya has decreased to 168.000

The United Nations has said that the number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Libya has dropped by 11.000 person (168.000 by January 31 compared to 179.000 in last November.)

A report of the Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, on the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, revealed that the pace of return has slowed due to the lack of housing, limited basic services, and concerns about personal security and social tolerance, adding that the IDPs remained at risk of recurrent displacement.

Libya has been elected as a member of the executive office of the Council of Arab Youth and Sports, affiliated with the Arab League, Hamza Al-Mahdawi, Director of the Information and Media Department at the Ministry of Sports, confirmed to "The Libya Observer" Friday.

"Minister of Sports Abdul Shafi Al-Juwifi was unanimously elected to the role at the conclusion of the Council's meetings held in the Egyptian capital on Thursday."

The Security Council has failed to implement decisions or impose punishments on either individuals or states, Libya's ambassador to the UN, Taher Al-Sunni said on Friday. 

Al-Sunni was speaking at a session before the Security Council to consider the situation in Libya.

Norland discusses with a number of Libyan institutions enhancing transparency

The US Ambassador, Richard Norland, has participated in a technical discussion with Libyan stakeholders from various state institutions to develop more transparency and accountability in public spending through a Libyan-owned process.

“All participants emphasized that Libyan revenues must always be held and managed by Libyans and spent in a manner that benefits the Libyans”, the US Embassy tweeted.
