Williams visits mass graves in Tarhuna, backs families' demands for justice

The UN Special Adviser on Libya, Stephanie Williams, has said that the UN and international justice mechanisms have made significant efforts to investigate violations in Libya, including the mass graves in Tarhuna.

Williams made her remarks during a visit to Tarhuna on Tuesday. She was accompanied by officials from the Public Prosecution Committee and the Criminal Investigations Department.

The UN Special Adviser on Libya, Stephanie Williams, has briefed the Vice-President of the Presidential Council Abdullah Al-Lafi on the upcoming consultations scheduled to take place in Cairo on 15 May between members of the joint committee formed by the House of Representatives and the High Council of State.

The meeting took place on Monday in the presence of the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Libya, Georgette Gagnon.

Libya has recorded an increase in gas flaring in its oil production sites during the past years, the World Bank said in its recent report concerning the global gas flaring.

The 2022 Global Gas Flaring Tracker Report produced by the World Bank’s Global Gas Flaring Reduction Partnership (GGFR) listed Libya among the ten top oil-producing countries responsible for three-quarters of all gas flaring in 2021.
