HNEC postpones Libya elections, proposes January 24 as new vote date

The High National Elections Commission (HNEC) announced postponing Libya elections that are supposed to be held on December 24, proposing the next January 24 as a new date for the vote, but stressing that the House of Representatives (HoR) is the entity entitled to set a new date for elections provided that it removes the force majeure on completing the election process.

The Libyan state has lost more than 350 thousand barrels per day in just two days due to the recent shutdown of four oil fields located southwest of the country, the Oil and Gas Minister Muhammed Oun said on Tuesday.

State-owned National Oil Corp. (NOC) said Monday that oil production from the Sharara, El Feel, Wafa, and Hamada oilfields, which jointly produce more than 300,000 barrels per day, was suspended.

IOM: More than 160 migrants drowned off Libya in a week

More than 160 migrants drowned in two separate incidents off the Libyan coast last week in the latest migrant disaster in the Mediterranean, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said.

At least 102 migrants died after their wooden boat capsized off the coast of Libya on Friday, said the spokeswoman for the IOM, Safa Meshali, who added that the Libyan authorities managed to bring back around eight survivors to shore.

Dbeibah: Lack of one of three stages led to failure of December 24 vote

The presidential candidate and Prime Minister, Abdul-Hamid Dbeibah, said in a seminar titled "Role of Women in Political Process" in Tripoli that Libya elections must be based on three stages and the lack of one of them led to the failure of December 24 vote.

Dbeibah said the first stage is a constitution so Libyans can refer to, and the second is laws that can ensure fair and credible elections, while the third stage is assurances of acceptance of the election results.
