The UN Secretary General’s Advisor on Libya, Stephanie Williams, discussed with presidential candidate, Aqila Saleh, the latest developments of setting a new date for presidential and parliamentary elections.

Williams said on Twitter she met with registered Presidential Candidate, Aqila Saleh in Al-Quba and welcomed his commitment for the continuation of the electoral process, including the need for all candidates to respect a level playing field.

Teacher and former US Navy submariner detained in Libya

CNN reported that Fernando Espinoza, a 29-year-old American teacher and former US Navy submariner, disappeared in Libya on November 9, five weeks after arriving in the country to start a new job at an international school in Tripoli.

His mother said he had ventured south of the city for a weekend trip to a desert oasis, but on his return was picked up for questioning, adding that the frequent texts he sent to her ceased.

Italian PM hopes political consultations will resume in Libya

Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi has expressed his hope for political consultations to resume in Libya and for setting a new date for elections.

At the end-of-year press conference, Draghi said Italy and Europe have accompanied the democratic process in Libya and will continue their support, adding that the failure to hold the elections was due to "Libyan institutional complexities."

PGF calls on its members to end siege on oilfields

The Petroleum Facilities Guard (PFG) has called for lifting the siege on the oil and gas fields without conditions.

A group of PFG members had shut down valves on pipelines running crude and gas from the Sharara, El Feel, Wafa, and Hamada fields, saying it was to pressure the authorities to grant them military accreditation and get some Infrastructure work done.

Amnesty International’s Deputy Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa, Diana Eltahawy, said Wednesday that Libyan authorities should use the postponed elections as an opportunity to break the cycle of impunity and ensure that those suspected of committing crimes under international law are excluded from positions that would allow them to commit further violations, interfere in investigations or grant them immunity.
