Salame at UN Security Council: Libyan National Conference is very vital

The Head of UNSMIL Ghassan Salame briefed the Security Council on Wednesday saying the Libyan National Conference will provide next month a crucial chance to end the 8-year long crisis in the country.

Salame added that the discussions they made with all Libyans resulted in the conviction that they need unity of institutions as soon as possible, but they are faced by some parties which are profiting off the chaos.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, received on Wednesday Chairman of the Presidential Council Fayez Al-Sarraj, who arrived in Ankara on a working visit.

The talks highlighted the latest developments in the political scene in Libya and the bilateral relations and ways to enhance them, as well as economic cooperation between the two countries.

Libya’s top religious cleric Shaikh Sadiq Al-Gharyan said on Wednesday that Libyans should not take part in the UN-backed National Conference until they know the agenda and names of the attendees.

Speaking in his weekly Islam and Life program on Tanasuh TV, he said there must be transparency about the conference, and that its conclusions should be regarded as recommendations and not binding decisions, pointing out that it is not permissible to go into the unknown.

The National Commission for Human Rights in Libya (NCHRL) has denounced the escalation of statements uttered by "Madkhalists" in Benghazi after they had recently called the Libyan Public Scout and Girl Guide Movement as well as Sufis non-believers.

NCHRL said on Monday that the imam of Al-Arqam bin Abi Al-Arqam mosque in Benghazi described the Public Scout and Girl Guide Movement last Friday as the byproduct of the "infidel west" and its "non-believing laws" warning of allowing children to join the movement.

UN deputy head supports civilian state in Libya not military rule

The deputy head of the UNSMIL for political affairs Stephanie Williams has reiterated support for the civilian statehood of Libya and rejection to the military operations or rule.

These remarks came in meeting for Williams with several revolutionary fighters from all across Libya as per her wish to talk about their representation in the upcoming National Conference.
