Libya's ambassador to the United Nations has caused outrage on social media after he claimed that the ISIS stronghold of Sirte could fall into the hands of Al-Qaida after defeating the radical group's militants from it.

Ibrahim Dabbashi said in his briefing on Libya at a UNSC meeting in New York on Monday that Sirte is expected to be liberated from ISIS within the coming 2 weeks, but it could be taken over by Al-Qaida.

Four killed and others wounded in armed clashes in Sabratha

Four people from Sabratha city were killed when armed clashes erupted in the city center Monday evening, media sources reported.

The Head of Sabratha Security Department, Abdelsalam Shuwaya, said armed clashes using light weapons broke out Monday between two brigades from the city lasting till late at night.

The head of the media bureau of Misrata hospital, Abdelaziz Issa, said the department of the injuries is facing a lot of obstacles regarding obtaining visas to send the wounded abroad for treatment, adding that it is also suffering from lack of financial support, which is necessary to help send the wounded abroad for treatment.

A number of former regime henchmen have been released from Hadbah Prison in Tripoli, authorities announced on Sunday, a day before the start of the holy month of Ramadan.

Tripoli Court of Appeal accepted the appeal lodged by Gaddafi Secretary of the General People's Congress Mohammed Al-Zwai, former Head of People's Control Authority Husni Al-Wahaishi, former Chairman of Islamic Call Society Mohammed Al-Sharif and former Governor of Central Bank of Libya Abdul-Hafeed Al-Zalitni, to free them for health reasons.

European Union holds Ramadan photo competition in Libya

The Delegation of the European Union to Libya is organising an online photo competition for Libyan photographers from June 05 to July 07, in celebration of the holy month of Ramadan.

During the competition, participants are invited to share photographs depicting their vision and interpretation of the values that mark this period of peace, forgiveness and sharing. Each week will commemorate a specific theme: youth, family, culture and reconciliation.

Tripoli-based CBL and its parallel counterpart agree to withdraw sixth issue of Libyan banknotes

The Central Bank of Libya based in Tripoli and its Al-Byada-based parallel counterpart agreed to withdraw the sixth issue of Libyan banknotes that are worth LYD1, LYD5 and LYD10, pointing that the withdrawal of banknotes will take place after forming a joint committee that shall specify the how and when of the process.

They both agreed that the committee will include five members and will be appointed by June 11 maximum.

Haftar’s warplanes bombed Sunday evening Wadi Al-Naqa district near the public stadium at the western entrance of Derna, without any casualties reported.

A source from Derna Shura Council told the press that warplanes of renegade General Khalifa Haftar also bombarded Sunday morning Al-Heela district, southern Derna, which coincided with the passing of a car related to Bu Shiha family and thus hitting it with some shrapnel leading to a mild injury of a kid in the car.

The command of the so-called Dignity Operation said, in a statement Saturday, that it won’t allow any of the ministries or bodies that are part of the UN-proposed government to work in Benghazi before they receive the approval of the Tobruk-based House of Representatives.

The statement also explained that the Security Backup Department and Special Tasks Department have been labelled as militias.

The spokesman of the Al-Bunyan Al-Marsoos (Solid Structure) operations chamber, Mohammed Al-Ghasri, has confirmed that the battle to free Sirte from IS terrorists is led solely by Libyan senior military leaders and soldiers, refuting news that says there are foreign forces or foreign military experts helping them on the ground.

In a press statement, Al-Ghasri denied Saturday the existence of British or Italian forces in the battlefield against IS militants, stressing “we free our homeland on our own.”
