EU provides €6.6 million support for Libya

The European Commission has finalised a new assistance package for Libya worth a total of €6.6 million. This support is financed under the European Neighbourhood Instrument in the framework of the European Neighbourhood Policy.

Through this support, the EU confirms its continuous support to the Libyan population in helping them to increase access to health services and in supporting youth in this extremely volatile situation. It consists of two programmes:

Cases of amputation reported during Milood celebrations

98 people have been burned during Milood celebrations in Tripoli, Burns and Cosmetic Hospital reported on Tuesday.

The hospital said 42 people suffered minor burns and 15 others had their limbs amputated due to the use of fireworks.

In Misrata, 15 cases of burns were reported, two of which were amputated.

Abducted Bangladeshi workers released

Six Bangladeshi workers have been rescued by the Special Deterrence Force.

The six workers were abducted by a Libyan gangster in collaboration with another Bangladeshi worker, who betrayed his friends for money, the SDF reported.

A ransom of LYD 10.000 for each were requested by the two abductors, but due to lack of money, the ransom was reduced to LYD 4.000 before the SDF managed to arrest them in an ambush. 

UNSC welcomes Libya's Skhirat government amid local rejection

The United Nation Security Council approved on Wednesday the government of Fayaz Sirraj, which was announced in Skhirat on December 17.

Sirraj government was imposed by the UN mission in Libya despite the refusal of GNC majority and lack of a quorum to give it a vote of confidence by Tobruk Parliament.

SDF rescues Maltese national Baldacchino

The Special Deterrence Force has rescued the General Manager of St James Hospital Group in Libya Pierre Baldacchino, who was kidnapped in Tripoli on December 15.

A five million euro ransom was demanded by the kidnappers before the SDF stormed his detention den in Ain Zara district last night.

Baldacchino said he was kept blindfolded and tied up for the whole time of abduction. Two of the kidnappers were arrested, the SDF said, while the others are on the run.

Foreign intervention came to Libya last week, Not military but political, as the United Nations broke its own rule book to push through a new Libyan government without democratic support or any basis in law.

GNC, HoR Presidents to meet in Oman

Presidents of GNC Nuri Abu Sahmain and Tobruk Parliament Aqailah saleh are due to meet Wednesday in Sultanate of Oman to finalize an agreement to form a government of national unity.

Both parliaments have already rejected UN-imposed government of Sirraj, which was signed by unauthorized members from the two sides in the Moroccan city of Skhirat last week, and called for a Libyan-Libyan dialogue instead.

The meeting of both presidents is the second within a week. The first meeting took place in Malta on December 15.

The international community looks at Libya as a lake of oil or as a bundle of gold, but we, Libyans, look at Libya as a nation, a mother and a soil saturated with the blood of our children. That is why only we can feel the pain, ambitions, dreams and the suffering of Libya and the Libyans.

Breish: LIA assets must remain frozen until a unity government is operational from Tripoli

"The Libyan Investment Authority's assets must remain frozen to safeguard them against the continued threat of misappropriation and corruption," Chairman and CEO of the authority said on Monday.  

Responding to calls by breakaway factions to unfreeze Libya's assets, Abdul-Magid Breish indicated that rogue parallel institutions outside the country have been appealing to the international community to loosen the sanction regime on the LIA's assets in order to gain access to these funds.

UN Sanctions Committee releases CBL funds

The UN Sanctions Committee has decided to release the frozen assets of the Central Bank of Libya deposited in three US banks.

In a confidential letter from the Governor of CBL Al-Siddiq Al-Kabir to the President of GNC Nuri Abu Sahmain on November 26, leaked on social media Monday, the UN Sanctions Committee released $19.279 billion of the frozen CBL assets in the Bank of America, Bank of Wells Fargo and Citibank Group.

It also agreed to release securities worth of $3 billion in favour for the Libyan Foreign Bank.

Ajdabia elders declare ceasefire

The elders and notables of Ajdabia have reached an agreement to declare a ceasefire, withdraw the militants out of the city, and remove checkpoints set up by civilians.

In a statement on Sunday, the elders added that any rights would be dealt with through the legal institutions represented by the Security Directorate or through customs and traditions represented by the elders of the city.
