1175 people have been killed in traffic accidents in the first six months of 2016, authorities have reported.

Data released by the Ministry of Interior showed a rise in traffic accidents during the first half of 2016 compared to the same period last year.

In this year’s first half, there were 2378 accidents resulting in 1175 deaths and 1863 injuries, the data showed, adding that 3581 vehicles were damaged.

In contrast, 2196 accidents were reported in the same period last year, which resulted in 1211 deaths and 1905 injuries.

The data also showed a decline in revenues compared to the same period last year from LYD 1414068.500 to LYD 1409905.250.

According to the data, most accidents occurred in Benghazi with 440 accidents reported. It was followed by Tripoli where 306 accidents were reported. Misrata came third with 149 accidents and Zawia fourth with 109 ones.
