Social media activists warned people not to deal with this counterfeit currency

The printed banknotes by the eastern Central Bank of Libya would be counterfeit, the US Embassy in Libya declared Wednesday, one day after the parallel bank announced it had printed LYD4 billion dinars in Russia.

"Such notes could undermine confidence in Libya’s currency and the CBL’s ability to manage monetary policy to enable economic recovery." The Embassy said.

It explained that it had received a letter from the Presidential Council (PC) of the UN-proposed government saying that Ali Al-Hibri, claiming to act as the Governor of the Central Bank of Libya, finalized a deal with an international company to print and deliver a big quantity of Libyan dinar banknotes.

Before printing the banknotes, the governor of the rival Central Bank of Libya Ali Al-Hibri has hired safebreakers to break into a vault that holds a trove of gold and silver coins worth $184 million after failing to get the secret code from Tripoli bank.

"The United States expresses its strong concern at reported efforts by certain parties to break into secure CBL facilities, including plans to drill into CBL safes, to circumvent CBL control over Libya’s financial resources." The Embassy added.

The US Embassy stressed as well that the Tripoli-based CBL is the only banking institution that works under the stewardship of the UN-proposed government.

On May 16, the US and 20 countries as well as 4 international organizations, issued a joint statement in Vienna saying that the CBL, National Oil Corporation, and Libyan Investment Authority, should work only in the line of the UN-proposed government.
